Maxis announces release date for Spore spin-off; due out in Europe April 1.
At the 2010 EA Studio Showcase, Maxis lifted the veil on its latest project, Darkspore. The action role-playing game is an entirely new entry in the series, and now, it has spawned a release date.
Darkspore arrives on April Fools' Day in Europe. Hopefully EA isn't joking.
According to a
message posted on the Darkspore forums by Maxis' community manager, Darkspore will be released in North America on March 29, followed by an April 1 premiere in Europe.
Maxis is currently soliciting beta applicants for Darkspore, and those interested in sampling the title prerelease can sign up at the
beta program page.
For more on the game--which meshes character creation with Diablo-style hack-and-slash action--check out GameSpot's hands-on preview, as well as coverage of the hour-long Darkspore Comic-Con panel from July. At the panel, Maxis designers spoke at length about the title and explained, "This is not a sequel to Spore. It's not an expansion pack. It's a brand-new game."

FCC grants LightSquared terrestrial-only waiver, puts an end to LTE drama
If you've been following the drama over LightSquared's application to build a wholesale integrated broadband / satellite network, it's time to put away the tissue box and toss out the bonbons. That's right, the FCC finally approved the company's conditional waiver for an ancillary terrestrial component integrated service rule. In other words, the entity gave LightSquared the green light to offer terrestrial-only phones, in addition to satellite service, as long as interference problems are addressed before the company starts building its network. Just two weeks ago, it looked like the FCC might strike down the proposal on a recommendation from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), which warned of potential interference on the SMS network with the likes of Department of Defense Communications. LightSquared remained silent during deliberation, but following the FCC's decision, both parties gave a thumbs up to the outcome. Honestly, we could have done with a more heated back and forth, but we'll leave that to the professionals. What time is Bridalplasty on again?Continue reading FCC grants LightSquared terrestrial-only waiver, puts an end to LTE dramaFCC grants LightSquared terrestrial-only waiver, puts an end to LTE drama originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 10:08:00 EDT. PCs to get Kinect 'in a formal way' - Microsoft CEO
CES 2011: Steve Ballmer tells BBC that motion-sensing system will make its way to windows systems...eventually.
At his
2011 Consumer Electronics Show keynote address, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made much of the Kinect, the xbox 360's motion-sensing system. The camera-based, controller-free peripheral shipped 8 million units last year, 3 million more than the 5 million units the company expected it to.
Kinect: Coming to the PCeventually.
With the kinect already a hit on the Xbox 360, many people are wondering if the add-on will ever be released for Microsoft's omnipresent product, Windows. Speaking with the
BBC, Ballmer appeared to confirm that a PC-compatible Kinect will indeed be released--eventually, anyway.
When asked "Will you be able to plug a Kinect into a PC?" by the interviewer, Ballmer answered thusly: "We'll support that in a formal way in the right time, and when we have an announcement to make, we'll make it."
Microsoft isn't the only one bringing Kinect technology to PCs. There are currently numerous research projects that have created open-source Windows drivers for the Kinect, leading to such experimental creations as a Kinect-based mini-copter and a Roomba-like robot. Also, earlier this week, Primesense, one of the companies behind Kinect tech, announced it was working on a similar motion-sensing system for the PC. Called WAVI Xtion, the system is being manufactured by PC maker Asus and will be available in the second quarter of this year.

Hauppauge is taking its HD component capture card internal
It wasn't that long ago that recording HD from just about any source on a PC was cost prohibitive. Then along came Hauppauge's HD PVR and while it isn't without its issues and limitations, it gets the job done at an affordable price. One of those limitations is the rather large external enclosure and the wall-wart that powers it. Now Hauppauge has addressed those nit picks with the release of an internal PCI-E capture card for $159. The single card can record up to 1080i from either component or unencrypted HDMI and will start shipping later this month. The support is very similar it its external brother, in fact other than the form factor, the two are very similar in most every other way. Another pictures and technical details after the jump.Continue reading Hauppauge is taking its HD component capture card internalHauppauge is taking its HD component capture card internal originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Jan 2011 00:06:00 EDT. REVIEW: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II Review
The Farce is strong with this one.
By and large, I enjoy the portable versions of Star Wars games. Granted, I may be biased, judging by the electronic R2-D2 that sits in the corner of my room (just next to the Yoda cut-out). Yet ever since the Game Boy Star Wars games, I have felt that the handheld renditions of Star Wars were crafted well - and yes, I enjoyed Star Wars Episode II: The New Droid Army. Star Wars the Force Unleashed II, however, is the video game equivalent of Jar Jar Binks. In his review of the Wii version of Force Unleashed II, Neal Ronaghan noted that the game was crippled by poor controls, weak storytelling, and pervasive monotony. The DS version manages to bring all the flaws of its console big brother onto the portable system, without having to shrink them down to size. In fact, with the exclusion of the Wii version's multiplayer, the game loses what Neal described as its only saving grace.
