Palm 'Think Beyond' teaser shows off glimpses of... something (updated with longer video)

HP and Palm aren't being shy about hyping up next week's big webOS event, and they're following up on that nod to our leak and CEO Leo Apotheker's comments with this "Think Beyond" teaser video. As is undoubtedly intended, we can't make much of the product from these brief glimpses of tapered curves, elegant switchgear, and what appears to be a charging connector -- but we'd like to think it's a tablet, because we are fundamentally very hopeful people. In any case, we'll see what Palm has in store for us next week -- and whether it can live up to all this buildup.

Update: We were just sent a longer version of the video, which we've swapped in above -- it shows a rear-facing camera and what's either a microphone or speaker grille. And is it just us, or is this thing looking pretty chubtastic or what? Original Palm video after the break. NEWS: 3D Viewing Confirmed for Pokemon 3DS

You'll be catching 'em all in a whole new dimension.
During a Q&A session following last week's Investor Conference, Satoru Iwata confirmed that he had indeed indicated that a Pokemon title is in progress for Nintendo 3DS. With such an announcement, naturally, the the prominence of the 3D was in
question. In talking to Nintendo's investors, President Satoru Iwata
said in response to a question as to whether including 3D in a Pokemon game is contradictory to health warnings for children under six years of age, "Naturally, we expect 3D viewing to become one of the attractions
when the new Pokémon title is released on Nintendo 3DS, but a number of
other attractions, which do not depend upon the 3D aspect, shall also be
realized."

Final Fantasy IV recounted on PSP April 19

Complete Collection of Square Enix role-playing game includes original Super Nintendo saga with visual overhaul in addition to The After Years episodic Wii epilogue.
In 2007, Square Enix released revamped versions of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II for the PSP to commemorate the role-playing game series' 20th anniversary. While the publisher opted not to honor Final Fantasy III in such fashion, Square Enix is back on board for the fourth installment, today announcing Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for the PSP.

The After Years has never been available as a retail product before.
Set for release April 19, The Complete Collection will include Final Fantasy IV--with revamped visuals to take advantage of the PSP's widescreen format--as well as its epilogue, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. The episodic series of downloadable titles was originally released in 2009 on the Wii; this will mark the first time it has been available as part of a retail product.

Originally released in 1991, Final Fantasy IV is better known by another name in North America. Because original publisher SquareSoft hadn't released the second or third installments in the series internationally, the company decided to release the game as Final Fantasy II when it hit North America later that year.

Darkspore materializes March 29

Maxis announces release date for Spore spin-off; due out in Europe April 1.
At the 2010 EA Studio Showcase, Maxis lifted the veil on its latest project, Darkspore. The action role-playing game is an entirely new entry in the series, and now, it has spawned a release date.

Darkspore arrives on April Fools' Day in Europe. Hopefully EA isn't joking.

According to a
message posted on the Darkspore forums by Maxis' community manager, Darkspore will be released in North America on March 29, followed by an April 1 premiere in Europe.

Maxis is currently soliciting beta applicants for Darkspore, and those interested in sampling the title prerelease can sign up at the
beta program page.

For more on the game--which meshes character creation with Diablo-style hack-and-slash action--check out GameSpot's hands-on preview, as well as coverage of the hour-long Darkspore Comic-Con panel from July. At the panel, Maxis designers spoke at length about the title and explained, "This is not a sequel to Spore. It's not an expansion pack. It's a brand-new game."

FCC grants LightSquared terrestrial-only waiver, puts an end to LTE drama

If you've been following the drama over LightSquared's application to build a wholesale integrated broadband / satellite network, it's time to put away the tissue box and toss out the bonbons. That's right, the FCC finally approved the company's conditional waiver for an ancillary terrestrial component integrated service rule. In other words, the entity gave LightSquared the green light to offer terrestrial-only phones, in addition to satellite service, as long as interference problems are addressed before the company starts building its network. Just two weeks ago, it looked like the FCC might strike down the proposal on a recommendation from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), which warned of potential interference on the SMS network with the likes of Department of Defense Communications. LightSquared remained silent during deliberation, but following the FCC's decision, both parties gave a thumbs up to the outcome. Honestly, we could have done with a more heated back and forth, but we'll leave that to the professionals. What time is Bridalplasty on again?Continue reading FCC grants LightSquared terrestrial-only waiver, puts an end to LTE dramaFCC grants LightSquared terrestrial-only waiver, puts an end to LTE drama originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 10:08:00 EDT. PCs to get Kinect 'in a formal way' - Microsoft CEO

CES 2011: Steve Ballmer tells BBC that motion-sensing system will make its way to windows systems...eventually.
At his
2011 Consumer Electronics Show keynote address, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made much of the Kinect, the xbox 360's motion-sensing system. The camera-based, controller-free peripheral shipped 8 million units last year, 3 million more than the 5 million units the company expected it to.

Kinect: Coming to the PC’eventually.

With the kinect already a hit on the Xbox 360, many people are wondering if the add-on will ever be released for Microsoft's omnipresent product, Windows. Speaking with the
BBC, Ballmer appeared to confirm that a PC-compatible Kinect will indeed be released--eventually, anyway.

When asked "Will you be able to plug a Kinect into a PC?" by the interviewer, Ballmer answered thusly: "We'll support that in a formal way in the right time, and when we have an announcement to make, we'll make it."

Microsoft isn't the only one bringing Kinect technology to PCs. There are currently numerous research projects that have created open-source Windows drivers for the Kinect, leading to such experimental creations as a Kinect-based mini-copter and a Roomba-like robot. Also, earlier this week, Primesense, one of the companies behind Kinect tech, announced it was working on a similar motion-sensing system for the PC. Called WAVI Xtion, the system is being manufactured by PC maker Asus and will be available in the second quarter of this year.
